Implementation and Effectiveness of a Community-based Participatory Approached Dementia Care Training Program among Six City Districts in Beijing

Abstract

Purpose:

To analyze the effectiveness of a dementia training program based on the approach of community-based participatory research.

Methods:

This program recruited 500 residences to participate four-time series dementia training program. Self-designed questionnaire and narrative feedback from participants were collected to evaluate the effectiveness of the program.

Results:

The score for the program evaluation was 95±2. More than 98% participants evaluated the content, instructors, and training place and facilities as “good” or “good above”. The content analysis was used to extract the themes. Community residences reflected that they got to understand the dementia and decrease the fear of it, and they also increased the skills of caring for elderly with dementia. Community managers reflected that they got to assure the roles of them on providing the care to demented residences, and the importance to keep learning.

Conclusion:

Community-based participatory approach could be utilized to guide the training program in the community with acceptable effectiveness.
