The serial position effect refers to the influence of the position of the memory material in the serial position. Words presented at the beginning and end of the list are recalled better than middle list items, producing a primacy and a recency effect, respectively. Studies had shown a relative between serial position effect and cognitive impairment. Therefore, we review mechanism, influence factors of serial position effect and its' correlation with cognitive impairment, in order to provide a certain value for clinical distinguishing of cognitive impairment.
