Care strategies for demented elderly at home during COVID-19

The outbreak of COVID-19 has a great influence on the elderly. It causes global morbidity and mortality, elderly people are in higher risk. This article summarized the protecting experience about dementia elderly and caregivers during the epidemic outbreak. The article examined the current impact of the pandemic on individuals with dementia elderly, discussed alleviate strategies for relieving the risk of COVID-19 infection with dementia elderly and caregivers, and proposed the management and countermeasures of mental hygiene, self-protection and anti-stigma during the time of COVID-19. China has the biggest population of elderly in the world. The safety and health of the people in the time of COVID-19 should be safeguarded, prevention and control must be done well. The key issues for home (care) demented elderly and caregivers are to give them help and support, took all possible ways in propaganda and education of epidemic prevention and management, put forward scientific and technical suggestions. China Association for Alzheimer's Disease (CAAD) is an NGO, especially aimed to serve the elderly demented people and caregivers. CAAD organized and mobilized the expert's resources of national wide to help demented elderly at home and caregivers. The experts help people to understand COVID-19 disease, improve self-protection awareness, and maintain close contact with community institutions, provide the knowledge for home protection. Due to China's national conditions and traditional cultural characteristics, the demented elderly mostly prefer cared at home. The main problem of the demented elderly is the decline of cognitive function, which causes the difficulty of life and work. Depression or abnormal mental behavior and deteriorate may occur during the development of the disease. The countermeasure included: to build harmonious family environment and community environment, understand environment change, also to help them cope with the difficult life during the epidemic and reduce the occurrence of mental behavior symptoms. The main problems faced by caregivers during the epidemic are lack of adequate rest time and real time of their own. Since communication with the outside world reduced, it caused increased stress, fear, physical and mental fatigue. CAAD provided the protection knowledge to the communities and individual people who needed, contacted with the community and gave them the skill of self-relaxation, provided the professional support. Based on the concerns for COVID-19 pandemic uncertainty in the recent future, CAAD will try to work hard to prevent and reduce the harm of the COVID-19 pandemic for individuals with elderly demented people and their caregivers.
