Effect of Beehive Protective Cover on Bee Colony Breeding and Foraging in Greenhouse Melon
To alleviate the effect of extreme high temperature in melon plastic greenhouse on pollinating bee colony in summer, honeybee colony was treated with beehive protective cover, the egg, larva, capped brood, quantity, pollen consumption and the proportion of bee carrying pollen were analyzed. The results showed that the highest temperature in the hive was 43.3℃ in the control group and 40.1℃ in the treatment group, which lasted for 8.5 h above 35℃ in the two groups, and for 5 h above 40℃ in the control group. The percentage of the capped brood reduction in the control group was higher than that in the treatment group, but there was no significant difference between the two groups (P>0.05). The number of eggs in the control group decreased, while the number of eggs in the treatment group increased. There was a significant difference between the two groups (P<0.05). The increase rate of larva in the treatment group was 3.94 times that in the control group, and there was a significant difference between the two groups (P<0.01). The reduction ratio of bee quantity in the control group [(49.83±0.17) %] was significantly higher than that in the treatment group [(27.22±1.47) %] (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in pollen consumption rate between control group and treatment group (P>0.05). Within one day, the number of bees carrying pollen in the treatment group was higher than that in the control group. The ratio of carrying pollen bees to homing bees in the treatment group [(23.29±3.03) %] was significantly higher than that in the control group [(7.21±1.04) %] (P<0.01). Therefore, the beehive protective cover can reduce and maintain the internal temperature of the bee colony, alleviate the adverse effect of environmental temperature change on the colony offspring, reduce the loss and the adjustment activities of the nest temperature of the bee colony, which is beneficial to the bee’s attendance for collecting pollen.
beehive protective cover / high temperature / colony growth and decline / pollen consumption / bees carrying pollen / greenhouse facilities

An apiary trial on the use of two acaricide formulations (gel-Apiguard and vermiculite and Api Life VAR) in the control of Varroa destructor (Anderson & Trueman) was conducted in summer 2001 in Sardinia (Italy). The main goals were 1) to determine their effectiveness against V. destructor, taking into account natural mite mortality in control hives; and simultaneously 2) to determine the persistence of both formulations and residues in honey and wax, by using a new extraction method. Both thymol formulations, after the treatments, reduced significantly the levels of mite infestations of adult bees and sealed brood, but their efficacy, expressed as percentage of mortality, was lower for both products (Api Life VAR 74.8 +/- 13.1 and 81.3 +/- 15.5, Apiguard 90.4 +/- 8.3 and 95.5 +/- 8.7 for sealed brood and adult bees, respectively) than the efficacy previously obtained with the same products in other experimental conditions. Moreover, a considerable colony-to-colony variability was recorded, and a significant negative effect of the thymol treatments on colony development was observed. During 2 wk of treatment, the bees removed nearly 95% of all the applied product (gel or vermiculite). Residues found in honey collected from the nest varied from 0.12 to 4.03 mg/kg for Api Life VAR and from 0.40 to 8.80 mg/kg for Apiguard. The residues were relatively higher in wax (Api Life VAR = 21.6 +/- 13.0; Apiguard = 147.7 +/- 188.9) than in honey, because thymol is a fat-soluble ingredient.

There is growing concern about declines in pollinator species, and more recently reservations have been expressed about mismatch in plant-pollinator synchrony as a consequence of phenological change caused by rising temperatures. Long-term changes in honeybee Apis mellifera phenology may have major consequences for agriculture, especially the pollinator market, as well as for honey production. To date, these aspects have received only modest attention. In the current study, we examine honeybee and beekeeping activity in southern Poland for the period 1965-2010, supplemented by hive yields from a beekeeper in southern UK in the same period. We show that despite negative reports on honeybee condition, and documented climate change, the studied apiary managed to show a marked increase in honey production over the 46 year study period, as did that from the UK. The proportion of the annual yield originating from the first harvest decreased during the study period and was associated with rising temperatures in summer. Honeybee spring phenology showed strong negative relationships with temperature but no overall change through time because temperatures of key early spring months had not increased significantly. In contrast, increasing yields and an increased number of harvests (and hence a later final harvest and longer season) were detected and were related to rising temperatures in late spring and in summer.

To investigate the possible consequences of brood-temperature regulation in honey bee colonies on the quality of behavioral performance of adults, we placed honey bee pupae in incubators and allowed them to develop at temperatures held constant at 32 degrees C, 34.5 degrees C, and 36 degrees C. This temperature range occurs naturally within hives. On emergence, the young adult bees were marked and introduced into foster colonies housed in normal and observation hives and allowed to live out their lives. No obvious difference in within-hive behavior was noted between the temperature-treated bees and the foster-colony bees. However, when the temperature-treated bees became foragers and were trained to visit a feeder 200 m from the hive, they exhibited clear differences in dance performance that could be correlated with the temperatures at which they had been raised: bees raised at 32 degrees C completed only approximately 20% of the dance circuits when compared with bees of the higher-temperature group. Also, the variance in the duration of the waggle phase is larger in 32 degrees C-raised bees compared with 36 degrees C-raised bees. All other parameters compared across all groups were not significantly different. One-trial learning and memory consolidation in the bees raised at different temperatures was investigated 1 and 10 min after conditioning the proboscis-extension reflex. Bees raised at 36 degrees C performed as expected for bees typically classified as "good learners," whereas bees raised at 32 degrees C and 34.5 degrees C performed significantly less well. We propose that the temperature at which pupae are raised will influence their behavioral performance as adults and may determine the tasks they carry out best inside and outside the hive.
