Challenges and Adaptation Strategies of Pig Farming Industry in China Under Extreme Weather Events
In response to the severe impacts of frequent extreme weather events on pig farming industry in China under global climate change, this study employs inductive analysis to integrate provincial meteorological disaster data and pig farming loss data from 2014 to 2024. It systematically analyzes the current status and challenges of China’s pig farming industry under extreme weather conditions, proposing corresponding adaptation strategies to enhance disaster resilience and ensure national food security. This research has found that China’s primary pig-producing regions exhibit significant spatial overlap with meteorological disaster risk zones such as drought and flooding. Provinces including Sichuan, Henan, and Anhui are situated within combined drought-flood risk zones. The number of pig farming loss incidents is positively correlated with the frequency of meteorological disasters. Extreme weather causes substantial economic damage through physical destruction, supply chain disruptions, and disease transmission and so on. Existing meteorological disaster response measures provide multidimensional coverage, but face challenges including the absence of innovative service information systems for pig farming, insufficient multi-departmental coordination and financial safeguards, and a lack of flexibility in infrastructure development. Consequently, this study proposes adaptation strategies centred on science and technology innovation: (1) Establish a disaster management system based on technological innovation; (2) promote the collaborative development mechanism of meteorology and finance; (3) develop modern technologies to enhance the adaptive capacity of pigs. This research provides scientific references for China’s pig farming industry to address extreme weather risks. Moving forward, regionally differentiated strategies and the transformation of technological achievements into practical applications should be further strengthened.

We review recent research of importance to understanding crop and pasture plant species response to climate change. Topics include plant response to elevated CO 2 concentration, interactions with climate change variables and air pollutants, impacts of increased climate variability and frequency of extreme events, the role of weeds and pests, disease and animal health, issues in biodiversity, and vulnerability of soil carbon pools. We critically analyze the links between fundamental knowledge at the plant and plot level and the additional socio-economic variables that determine actual production and trade of food at regional to global scales. We conclude by making recommendations for current and future research needs, with a focus on continued and improved integration of experimental and modeling efforts.\n

Crop production stands as a pivotal pillar of global food security, but its sustainability faces complex challenges from plant diseases, which pose a substantial threat to agricultural productivity. Climate change significantly alters the dynamics of plant pathogens, primarily through changes in temperature, humidity, and precipitation patterns, which can enhance the virulence and spread of various plant diseases. Indeed, the increased frequency of extreme weather events, which is a direct consequence of climate change, creates favorable conditions for outbreaks of plant diseases. As global temperatures rise, the geographic range of many plant pathogens is expanding, exposing new regions and species to diseases previously limited to warmer climates. Climate change not only affects the prevalence and severity of plant diseases but also influences the effectiveness of disease management strategies, necessitating adaptive approaches in agricultural practices. This review presents a thorough examination of the relationship between climate change and plant pathogens and carefully provides an analysis of the interplay between climatic shifts and disease dynamics. In addition to insights into the development of effective strategies for countering the adverse impacts of climate change on plant diseases, these insights hold significant promise for bolstering global crop production resilience against mounting environmental challenges. |

Plant disease outbreaks pose significant risks to global food security and environmental sustainability worldwide, and result in the loss of primary productivity and biodiversity that negatively impact the environmental and socio-economic conditions of affected regions. Climate change further increases outbreak risks by altering pathogen evolution and host-pathogen interactions and facilitating the emergence of new pathogenic strains. Pathogen range can shift, increasing the spread of plant diseases in new areas. In this Review, we examine how plant disease pressures are likely to change under future climate scenarios and how these changes will relate to plant productivity in natural and agricultural ecosystems. We explore current and future impacts of climate change on pathogen biogeography, disease incidence and severity, and their effects on natural ecosystems, agriculture and food production. We propose that amendment of the current conceptual framework and incorporation of eco-evolutionary theories into research could improve our mechanistic understanding and prediction of pathogen spread in future climates, to mitigate the future risk of disease outbreaks. We highlight the need for a science-policy interface that works closely with relevant intergovernmental organizations to provide effective monitoring and management of plant disease under future climate scenarios, to ensure long-term food and nutrient security and sustainability of natural ecosystems.© 2023. To ease the fluctuation of hog prices and maintain the hog market’s stability, the central government of China has issued a series of hog price control policies. This paper, supplemented by co-word analysis and LDA thematic modeling, constructed 9 first-level indicators and 36 second-level indicators and used a PMC index model to conduct quantitative research on the selected 74 policies and regulations of China’s pig price regulation policies from July 2007 to April 2020. The research concludes that the research tool system of China’s hog price control is formed. The overall design of the hog price control policy is relatively reasonable, but there are still the following problems: the subject of China’s pig price control policy is singular, so it is difficult to form a resultant force; the policy pays attention to the price regulation in the short term, but ignores the long-term industrial structure adjustment; it emphasizes market supervision, but insufficient support for slaughtering and processing; it focuses on production and management to improve the development quality and efficiency of the pig industry, but does not take social equity into account. Finally, some policy suggestions are put forward: multi-department division of labor and close cooperation; adjusting the industrial structure of hog and carrying out appropriate large-scale breeding; establishing the operation mode of slaughtering and processing in the producing area to reduce the circulation cost of the pig industry; ensuring the consumption of pork by low-income groups and giving consideration to social efficiency and equity.

African swine fever (ASF) is a virulent infectious disease of pigs. As there is no effective vaccine and treatment method at present, it poses a great threat to the pig industry once it breaks out. In this paper, we used ASF outbreak data and the WorldClim database meteorological data and selected the CfsSubset Evaluator-Best First feature selection method combined with the random forest algorithms to construct an African swine fever outbreak prediction model. Subsequently, we also established a test set for data other than modelling, and the accuracy accuracy value range of the model on the independent test set was 76.02%-84.64%, which indicated that the modelling effect was better and the prediction accuracy was higher than previous estimates. In addition, logistic regression analysis was conducted on 12 features used for modelling and the ROC curves were drawn. The results showed that the bio14 features (precipitation of driest month) had the largest contribution to the outbreak of ASF, and it was speculated that the outbreak of the epidemic was significantly related to precipitation. Finally, we used this qualitative prediction model to build a global online prediction system for ASF outbreaks, in the hope that this study will help to decision-makers who can then take the relevant prevention and control measures in order to prevent the further spread of future epidemics of the disease.© 2019 Blackwell Verlag GmbH.

We conducted a systematic literature review to document the scientific knowledge about climate change impacts and adaptation in livestock systems, and to identify research gaps. The analysis was built from the premise that livestock offers substantial opportunities for food security and sustainable development if adaptation to climate change is appropriated. In examining 126 suitable peer-reviewed publications we discovered five research gaps: (1) a lack of research in Asia and South America; (2) a lack of mutual investigation and linkages between impacts and adaptation; (3) a lack of emphasis on mixed crop-livestock systems; (4) a lack of emphasis on monogastric livestock; and (5) an underrepresentation of quantitative methods including yield impact models. The findings suggest that the research on climate change impacts and adaptation in livestock systems needs to move beyond certain geographical contexts and consider key vulnerability priorities, particularly from developing countries. It is pivotal that research begins to jointly look at climate change impacts and the livestock keepers’ adaptation to draw out policy implications and to effectively target support for impact-specific adaptation options. Only if such evidence is established, adaptation will be appropriated accordingly to the needs of the livestock sector, and provision for the growing demand of animal-based products will be secured.

This study examined climate change impacts (CCI) on productivity of pig production systems, their resource use, environmental impacts and the relevance of potential adaptation options. The impact of increasing temperature and temperature-humidity index (THI) on performance of pigs in confined housing systems was analysed by a meta-analysis. Using climate data for an Austrian site for the period 1981 to 2010, different scenarios (cold year, warm year, hot year, worst case scenario) were modelled and compared. Although significant differences between thermoneutral and heat stress conditions were detected for the analysed traits of growing and finishing pigs, overall performance, resource use (cumulative energy demand) and environmental impacts (global warming, acidification and eutrophication potential) per kg of live mass for finished pigs and reared piglets did not significantly differ between most scenarios. Elements of pig production systems resilient to CCI, which were not considered under performance and environmental impacts (LCA), were addressed in a system analysis that was based on literature and expert knowledge. The most important detected system elements are plants and animals with an appropriate genetic potential, securing the access to inexpensive feed, including land for feed production, securing water supply and the implementation of health plans and measures against diseases associated with CCI.
