Abstract

The development of dye industry makes the treatment of dye waste liquid a challenge for environmental protection. Due to the high specific surface area and rich surface functional groups, biochar has excellent performance in adsorption of waste liquid dye substances, which makes it an efficient, economical and environmentally friendly adsorption material. This paper reviewed the adsorption mechanism and influencing factors of biochar in the dye adsorption process. It was pointed out that: (1) the adsorption mechanism of biochar on dye waste liquid including hydrogen bonding, π-π interaction, electrostatic interaction, coordination and ion exchange, jointly determined the interaction and adsorption efficiency of biochar and dye molecules. (2)The factors affecting the adsorption capacity of biochar included the raw materials, modification methods and preparation processes of biochar. (3)The properties of waste liquid, such as solution pH and ion concentration, also affected the adsorption capacity of biochar for dyes. Finally, the problems in the current biochar adsorption research, such as the single research object, the process and cost, and the impact on environment, had yet to be solved. This paper provides a reference for subsequent research to promote the practical application of biochar in the treatment of dye waste liquid.

Wastewater contaminated by organic dyes is a serious environmental concern. Absorption and photodegradation are two of the most common methods for organic dye molecule removal in wastewater. In this work, we develop a facile method to synthesize CaWO4-biochar nanocomposites by co-precipitation method with calcium chloride and sodium tungstate in the presence of commercial biochar. The prepared CaWO4-biochar nanocomposites combine the adsorption effect from biochar and photodecoloration of dyes from CaWO4 nanoparticles. The influence of the ratio of CaWO4 to biochar on the organic dyes including rhodamine (RhB) and methyl orange (MO) is studied. The improved organic dye removal capacity of the CaWO4-biochar composites compared with bare biochar is obtained. The synthesis of CaWO4-biochar composites developed in this work provide a facial technique to improve the biochar removal abilities, which can be used in industrial wastewater treatment to increase the organic dye removal efficiency.

In this study, mesoporous activated biochar with high surface area and controlled pore size was prepared from char obtained as a by-product of pyrolysis of Prosopis juliflora biomass. The activation was carried out by a simple process that involved H2O2 treatment followed by microwave pyrolysis. H2O2 impregnation time and microwave power were optimized to obtain biochar with high specific surface area and high adsorption capacity for commercial dyes such as Remazol Brilliant Blue and Methylene Blue. Adsorption parameters such as initial pH of the dye solution and adsorbent dosage were also optimized. Pore size distribution, surface morphology and elemental composition of activated biochar were thoroughly characterized. H2O2 impregnation time of 24h and microwave power of 600W produced nanostructured biochar with narrow and deep pores of 357m(2)g(-1) specific surface area. Langmuir and Langmuir-Freundlich isotherms described the adsorption equilibrium, while pseudo second order model described the kinetics of adsorption. Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd.
